Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine - The Audacity of Hype

Jello Baifra was inspired by the Stooges gig on Iggy Pop's 60th birthday party in San Francisco so he planned his own birthday party and created his band. Originally called Jello Biafra and the Axis Of Merry Evildoers, the band consisted of Jello Biafra,Ralph Spight (Victims Family, Freak Accident, Hellworms), Jon Weiss (Sharkbait, Horsey), Billy Gould (Faith No More). They sold out the 2 concerts they played at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. They got super excited by the response the shows generated and spent the next 9 months rehearsing and writing and added guitarist Kimo Ball (Freak Accident, Carneyball Johnson, Mol Triffid, Griddle) to their lineup. What came out was Audacity of Hype.

You can buy the LP for only $12 over at Alternative Tentacle. They will be releasing a CD soon.

Vinyl Life

Very old-school inspired, but totally fresh at the same time. All analog, computer-free sets and recordings are one thing that set this group apart - everything you hear is the real deal, no fruity-loops. If you go here you can stream the entire album, download a couple tracks, and buy the album in CD, vinyl, and cassette (in 3 different designs) format all for very reasonable prices; you can also stream the Extended Mixes Vol 1.
 OR
If you don't feel like waiting for the album to be shipped, or just dont like physical products, you can download the album for a name your own price (min $1) in a A veriety of MP3 and AAC formats, OGG, ALAC, and FLAC.

So far my favorite track is High Tops.

Desert Sessions 1-6 Reissue

I recently found someone selling the Dessert Sesions 1-6 on colored vinyl on eBay. I was outbid but I think I'm going to try to track it down from some other source - it's just too awesome not to have. The seller is apparently selling a bunch of his stoner-rock record collection because he needs money, so now might be a good time to scour eBay for that rare stone-rock record you've always wanted.

Splitting the Atom

Massive Attack is putting out a new EP called Splitting the Atom on October 5th. The four-track release has 2 tracks remixed and all tracks feature guest artists. The entire EP has a subdued groove to it, something to chill to while feeling very cool. The remixes are thought to be included in their origional form on Massive Attack's upcoming full-length album expected in February.

Tracklist:
  1. “Splitting The Atom” (Feat. The 3D, Daddy G, and Horace Andy) [mp3]
  2. “Pray For Rain” (Feat. Tunde Adebimpe)
  3. “Psyche (Van Rivers & The Subliminal Kid Remix)” (Feat. Martina Topley Bird)
  4. “Bulletproof Love (Christoff Berg Remix)” (Feat. Guy Garvey)

Xenophanes

Omar Rodrigues Lopez has created a masterpiece with this album. Beautiful vocals are not overpowered by the prog-rock music. The tinkling piano in the background of many songs is a great touch. Everyone should give this album a listen.

Thinking about Music

I just discovered A great Avant Garde Jazz band called Medeski, Martin & Wood. They have great memorable tunes and are excellent musicians. Despite their label as avant garde they create surprisingly accessible music.
